Sex Work Research Convention 2018
27.+28. September, Berlin
Sex work as a research topic offers intriguing insights into commercial eroticism and human sexuality. Over the last thirty years, research on sex work has grown and the number of publications in this field is increasing.
At the Sex Work Research Convention, current projects looking at sex work will be presented and discussed. This year there will be a wide variety of topics exposing different aspects of sex work, from professionalization to the sex worker rights movement in Germany.
During the convention, researchers will have the opportunity to network and learn about current trends in sex work research. Aside from the long
presentations of current and recently completed studies, there will also be short poster presentations of current and recently begun projects. What is unique about this convention is that it is connected to this year’s Whores Congress (28-29 September), enabling researchers to participate in workshops on the first day of the Congress (28 September) where they will have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with sex workers. This will strengthen the understanding between the research and sex work communities, allowing for better collaboration for future research projects.
On the first day of the Congress, two workshops will be open to researchers: 1) Qualitative Methods for Sex Work Research and 2) Doing Interviews with Stigmatised Groups. In both workshops, researchers and sex workers will have the chance to discuss research methods and participatory research approaches.
Note: The other workshops on this day will be sex worker-only. This means that participants must have current or former sex work experience to take part in the workshop.
The convention is open to active and former researchers studying sex work, students who are interested in doing research on sex work, as well as people who are or work with sex workers and have a sex work-positive outlook.

Guidelines for Posters
For those of you making posters, we look forward to your contribution! Here are some things your poster may include, particularly the final point:
After the other presentations of current and recently completed projects, those who signed up to present their poster will have 10-15 minutes to do so. This is an opportunity to go over the points in your project that may not have fit onto the poster. All posters (including those that were not presented) will be exhibited in the rooms on the first day of the Whores Congress, so that sex workers will also have a chance to view and give feedback on research projects. There will be slips of paper provided, on which viewers may write comments and post these onto the poster, so that researchers can also receive written feedback for their projects.
