Selfdefence for sexworkers
Pesha
English, SW Only – until 19.00
S.W.A.G (SexWorkAutodéfenseGroupe) is a sex worker-led self-defence project which originated in response to increasing violence in France since the criminalisation of our clients. After the law penalizing clients was voted in France in 2016, violence against sex workers increased in a tragic way: self-defence is one of our responses, as a political, empowering tool. It increases solidarity in the community, develops self-confidence, and support our self-organisation and community mobilisation. When governments are violent, we find our own solutions to take care of our own security. This project is a partnership between Strass (French sex worker union) Doctors of the World, and Chaffle (a new French feminist association of artists and martial art fighters). 10 new sex workers trainers will soon be ready to organize workshops in France, in different languages. We are now connected with ICRSE, TAMPEP and have organised trainings in 2018 in Scotland with SCOT-PEP. We should organize some more soon with ECP in UK and Silver Rose in Russia. We would like to extend to more countries, in order to reinforce the network and share our techniques.
As a sex worker I know that many of us developed instinctively a “sixth sense” about how to understand people, especially face to face, because the virtual communication that we often use through technology devices deprivate sometimes ourselves of a part of understanding even though I know that after some time it is possible to read other signals.
I myself received many times a comment like “that was better than a psychologist session”, or “you really understand me”, even if I think that everyone has is job and I would never substitute myself to a psychologist, and sometimes people are just overexcited about what they felt, especially when they feel understood and accepted by someone outside their daily routine.
The workshop will be divided in two parts, a theoretical one at first where some basic notions will be given and a practical one after that where we will play reading our bodies.
Longevity and satisfaction in sex work calls for practical and sustainable approaches to setting limits and coming to terms with yourself and your work.
This workshop is designed for sex workers seeking ideas and approaches to setting boundaries and applying these in their work. We will talk about what self-care means in sex work and how this can be used for doing sex work on a long-term, healthy basis.
Some of the topics that will be addressed in the workshop include:
*How do I set my boundaries and deal with clients who try to cross these?
*What are some strategies for dealing with myself and my work?
*What type of sex work and how much is good for me? Do I need more of a structure or creative chaos?
*How does my social environment influence my self-image?
*What kinds of relationships are supportive in my work?
The workshop will be focused on these different areas, with the goal of raising self-awareness and appreciation. Approaches will be discussed in a final plenary discussion.
In this workshop the most common methods for qualitative research will be introduced and their application to research on sex work discussed. The workshop will be organised in „World Café-style“, which means that various topics in sex work research will be discussed in small groups. Each participant will have the chance to enquire into each topic and make contributions. What is unique about this workshop is that researchers and sex workers come together to exchange knowledge and talk about their experiences with research or being researched. This presents an ideal opportunity to talk about the interaction between the research and sex work communities and how to improve cooperation betwen the two. Therefore, participation from sex workers is highly encouraged here! An outcome of the workshop will be the creation of a set of guidelines for researchers studying sex work
Dirty Talk + suggestive techniques
Undine de Rivière
German, Sexworker only
This workshop is about the theory and practice of doing interviews with marginalised groups, or with discrete service providers. Interviews are the most commonly used form of data collection in qualitative research. Some focus on a specific topic, whereas others provide a space for participants to tell their life history. What both approaches have in common is the collaboration between interviewee and researcher in generating data. This comes with many challenges and calls for special training, particularly when researching sensitive topics. After an introduction to the advantages and limits of interviews in which participants will learn more about the dynamics of interviews, there will also be an opportunity to practice amongst each other. Students and experienced researchers will also get to practice their interview skills with sex workers participating in the workshop and in this way receive direct feedback and connect with potential interview partners for their own projects.
